Been happily running Squirt drip wax through training and ultras, including a 1000k, zero issues. Yes, it never fully hardens and picks up dirt, but a regular clean sorts that out. A mate swears by Silca hot wax and rewaxes every 400-500km. I’m out here dripping every 100-150km like it’s a part-time job, so naturally I got curious and ordered some. New chain, stripped properly: two washes with brake cleaner, one with isopropyl, fully dried. Melted the wax in my kettle at 80°C (keep-warm function, very fancy), dunked the chain, agitated for 6-7 minutes, hung it on the balcony overnight to harden. Next morning: broke every link, mounted it, went out. First 20km were exactly as advertised. Pure bliss. Then it got louder. And louder. Shifting went rougher. 50km later I was home and the chain was already chirping for rewax. Consulted the oracle (ChatGPT, it’s 2026). Verdict: probably not stripped well enough, wax didn’t bond to the rollers. Boiled it, dried it 24 hours, rewaxed, hardened overnight. 180km later it’s worse than before. Today I had to stop mid-ride and hit it with my emergency drip-on from the saddle bag. Instant silence. From a 12€ bottle. My 40€ block of Silca is currently losing to budget Squirt and I have no idea why. What am I doing wrong?
