THE ESSENTIALSWHAT#1 Michigan (36-3, 19-1 B10) vs#9 UConn (34-5, 17-3 BE) WHEREThe Sklar Brothers' Mom ArenaIndianapolis, IN WHEN8:49 PMTHE LINEKenpom: M -7Torvik: M -7TELEVISIONCBSPBP: Ian EagleColor: Raftery/HillTHE OVERVIEWWell… uh… that was emphatic. I said the Arizona game was a coinflip even expecting 37 minutes of full-go Yaxel Lendeborg. Michigan got 15 minutes of 48 year old YMCA Yaxel and still obliterated the second-best team in the country. Now: Finland. Or Washington. Take your pick. The stakes are simple: win a national title and write your name amongst the best college basketball teams of all time, or fall at the final hurdle, trailing good vibes and what ifs off into the distance. The opponent is formidable: a Danny Hurley UConn team that is on an unprecedented second-weekend-or-later win streak, sporting a center who used to play at Michigan. It's all a little on the nose.UConn did not have the season an Arizona or Duke did; they sit 9th in Kenpom. But they did go 34-5 and 17-3 in the Big East—remarkably not enough to win the title as St John's went 18-2. Common opponents:ARIZONA: lost 71-67 back in NovemberILLINOIS: won 74-61 in November and 71-62 a couple days agoVILLANOVA: won 75-67 in OT and 73-63UCLA: won 73-57MSU: won 67-63DUKE: won 73-72(sorta) ST JOHNS: lost 81-72 and 72-52.UConn's five losses include the three listed above against jumbo teams Arizona and St John's; the other two were inexplicable Ls to Creighton and Marquette, both teams in the back half of the top 100. One of those was just UConn shooting 13% from three. The other was giving up 1.21 points per possession to Creighton thanks to 10/21 shooting from 3 and 27/32 from the line. It's notable that the two most rough and tumble teams UConn played this year, Arizona and St John's, went 3-0 against them. Michigan with Lendeborg would be a good bet to repeat that. Without… who knows? I guess we can take solace in obliterating Arizona.[After THE JUMP: voodoo juju]THE USClick for big.So: Yaxel Lendeborg's status is up in the air. This seems like good news for Michigan:Wolverines coach Dusty May told reporters Sunday afternoon that “all imaging has come back clean” and that Lendeborg will spend the day getting treatment and doing rehab. His injury was originally thought to be a sprained MCL, but Michigan trainer Chris Williams said Lendeborg is suffering from a bone bruise. “I’m sure he’ll give it a go tomorrow, but that’ll be entirely up to him and the medical staff,” May said.Lendeborg said “I feel great!” and gave a big smile as he walked out of Michigan’s locker room Sunday afternoon. He wasn’t limping nearly as much as he was during Saturday’s postgame and assured media he got out of bed Sunday morning without falling down, so “I’m good.”There is always a chance that Michigan is engaging in some gamesmanship here and that Lendeborg will be hobbled to the point where his appearance in the final is token… but I'll take that. I still think it's more likely than not that Lendeborg is more or less a non-factor. That is significantly up from a 0% chance.THE THEMClick for big as Michigan goes from one Bo Ryan Index extreme to anotherFirst off: shooting guard Solo Ball was spotted with his foot in a boot yesterday, and Dan Hurley made it sound like his availability was in question:"Solo, you'll see him, he's in a boot, took some type of a foot sprain, so won't participate in anything today and see how he's feeling tomorrow," Hurley said.Asked whether Ball will be able to play against Michigan, Hurley admitted he was unsure. In fact, Hurley only found out Ball was injured upon seeing him in the boot.Ball played 29 minutes against Illinois and broke out of a severe tourney shooting slump by going 3/7 from deep, but said he got through that game "on adrenaline." We'll preview the Huskies like Ball is available. On to the personnel: you will be familiar with UConn C Tarris Reed, who spent two years in Ann Arbor. In Ann Arbor Reed was physically promising but offensively unproductive; he also had a bad habit of trying to block shots that nobody should try to block. A few years later I think we can say that Juwan Howard's medical issues meant Reed didn't get the coaching he needed, because he was instantly an AA caliber center in Storrs. Now in year two, Reed is a refined version of the promising dude who left Ann Arbor. He's shooting 62% from two with a top 50 block rate and an OREB rate just outside the top 50; last year he was the country's second-best offensive rebounder. He is no longer the turnover-prone face-up player he was in Ann Arbor; instead he is a crafty back to the basket scorer. Elite? No. Just good:UConn is considerably more efficient when Reed is passing out of the post, and his shooting dips to 56% against KP50 opponents. He is not an explosive vertical athlete and does get affected by size, which Michigan has a lot of. Michigan's concern is whether Reed can pound Mara under the basket; there's no question who the more physical player is. Either way, I do not expect doubles. Michigan will sink or swim against Reed one on one.Reed is a massive presence on rebounds even if his numbers have dropped from stratospheric to merely top-50-ish; he's also a guy who seems like a rare difference-maker as a defensive rebounder, where he's top 50 nationally and seems to take up the space of two dudes.Defensively, Reed has matured into a beast. His on/offs aren't incredible because he's backed up by a near-five-star freshman but he's the main/only rim protector UConn has and their outstanding two point D is largely Reed, as UConn gives up a lot of shots at the basket but not a lot of points there.UConn does not run a second big, ever. Instead their ogre surrounded by shooters, a la Purdue most years. (Not so much this year.)Their four spot is occupied by senior Alex Karaban, who almost never leaves the floor. He's had fewer than 34 minutes once since February 18th. Karaban is a four-year starter who has been a crucial part of two UConn title teams already, a 6'8" sniper who is equally effective inside and out. His best asset is high-volume motion shooting, which has led to a 38% hit rate on a whopping 770 career 3PAs. That is exactly his mark this year. But Karaban is Not Just A Shooter, getting about half of his shots inside the line, hitting 56%. He doesn't turn the ball over, hits FTs, and provides a reasonable number of offensive rebounds. His only statistical downside is a relative lack of free throws.Karaban's potential issue in this game is that he is a wing. He's a big wing, but he's a wing. He's more filled out than your Amari Allens or Nate Aments, hitting 230 after arriving in Storrs at 210 four years ago, but he is close to the polar opposite of the bear-men Michigan has had flung at them the past two games. If there is an obvious place for Michigan to exploit its frontcourt size and strength, it's putting Karaban in the sharpshooter in the post. You are probably familiar with Duke slayer Braylon Mullins, a freshman wing (composite #15) who earned his lofty rating not by being an NBA-ready athlete but by being the more-or-less undisputed best shooter in his class. That hasn't quite worked out the way you might want, at least from deep. 34% is fine; it's not clearly plus territory.Still, it feels a rampage is coming sooner or later. Mullins doesn't get to the line much but is 89% there. Meanwhile his two point shooting is completely insane: he is better from the midrange, where he hits an astonishing 59%. A slim majority of those are unassisted.ye godsThose two things plus the recruiting cred means that Mullins is the top candidate to shoot UConn to a national title despite the pedestrian numbers to date. At some point there's only so much you can do against a 6'6" Foster Loyer. Mullins has a quick-release push shot that is difficult to contest, and this offense is Painter-level at generating open looks off of off-ball screening.Michigan's switching should help, as UConn's various complicated actions get a lot easier to deal with when you don't have to chase over screens so much. Mullins is a premiere motion shooter, but one thing he is not—at least not yet—is a dude who is going to pull up from deep. 90% of his threes are assisted and you can see he's at 0.87 PPP on deep pull ups. With Ball iffy and Karaban likely to be in post defense hell, getting a hand in Mullins's face is the #1 priority on most UConn possessions.Ball is the shooting guard, emphasis on "shooting." He's gotten up almost 500 threes the past two years. The catch for Ball is that this season is a full-on Sophomore Tim Hardaway Jr event. After hitting 41% on crazy volume a year ago he has slipped to 30% this year, 25% against KP50 teams.Much of this has been attributed to a midseason wrist injury that didn't take him off the floor but did affect his shot, but until the Illinois game there was very little indication that Ball was on the verge of breaking out of his year-long slump. He was just 3/21 before going 3/7 against Illinois, and now the foot injury seems likely to throw him off yet further.Ball does venture inside the line a fair bit, where he's hit 55% on the year. That's a significant boost from last season. He is very much in NJAS mode, though: some free throws, not many, not very good at the rim, solid TO rate, assist rate of 10. Ball attacks closeouts and will drive to the basket if a UConn action gets him a lateral advantage, but he's not driving play on a regular basis… even when fully healthy. The thing driving Ball's improvement inside the line is a big jump in midrange efficiency, but again this is not a pull-up threat:The thing that'll happen off a Ball PNR is a pull up, but from two. Finally, point guard Silas Demary transferred in from Georgia. He is very similar to Cadeau statistically but has a couple inches on him and is more of an interior-focused player. Unlike most of the UConn guards and wings he is going to drive into contact and see what happens. That means he's not super efficient from 2 (48%) but he gets to the line more than anyone other than reed and hits 80% whilst there; his assist rate and TO rate are bang on Cadeau's.This is truly the head of the snake:Everything is going to run through Demary, and the options Michigan has here aren't great. But there is a clear imperative: let Demary shoot. Good at midrange and good-ish at attacking the rim are under a point per possession. Everything else is death.Demary is a 39% three point shooter and was at 37% on solid volume a year ago, but circumstance means that he's usually the guy setting up a three, whether it's directly or via hockey assist, and his own three-point shot has been relatively infrequent. Still not a great result if he gets an open look.UConn has better depth than most of Michigan's opponents to date:Dayton transfer Malachi Smith is the backup point guard and would be the main guy replacing Ball if it comes to that. That would be a problem for UConn since his shooting line is 32/47/53 with a majority of his usage inside the line. A guy who does not want to shoot unless he gets a C+S 3 opportunity and someone who would likely get eaten up by Michigan drop coverage.Freshman C Eric Reibe (composite #28) backs up Reed. Over the course of the season he got about a third of UConn minutes; in the tournament that has been slashed back. The only tourney game he's gotten more than a handful of minutes in was round two against UCLA, which was not coincidentally UConn's easiest win in the tourney. 7, 7, and 5 min against MSU/Duke/Illinois. Despite this lack of PT of late, Reibe was quite good over the course of the season: 69% from two and 66% in KP50 games, 6% block rate, 10 OREB rate, decent TO avoidance. FTs are a problem (52%).6'7" junior wing Jayden Ross is getting about half of UConn's minutes of late; efficient but extremely low-usage player who shoots 64/40/69 on minimal volume and adds a lot of defensive box score events. Too many turnovers for his usage level.Fellow 6'7" junior wing Jaylin Stewart was a starter at the beginning of the year, then a sixth man type. Then he had to have surgery to remove some bone chips in his knee, missing eight games. He returned for the second weekend of the tourney but has not seen much time, with a total of 15 minutes in the three games he's played in. Peripheral offensive presence shooting 53/35/59 on 15% usage, decent playmaker, TO rate near 20.THE TEMPO FREEA jump-shooting team with a big ol' guy in the middle:Drill down items:UConn's two biggest strengths defensively are 2P% and blocked shots, both of which seem like relatively bad strengths to take into a game against Michigan. I say this because UConn is pedestrian in average two point distance allowed; challenging at the rim is where they make their money. They are 4th nationally there, and looking at the roster that has to be ~all Reed.Hurley prefers his intricate half-court sets to transition; UConn is 340th in tempo. This should give Michigan some leave to go after offensive boards.UConn is 7th nationally in A/FGM; Michigan is top 50 in preventing assists and has been on an assist prevention tear in the tournament. We know Michigan is going to switch; we don't know how Hurley is going to attempt to combat that. They're around 50th at the rim and on other twos; Michigan's length may help disrupt those longer shots… and force some additional mid-rangers.Shots overall:Switch everything, don't help, and live with the results. If they're on fire from midrange so be it.KEY TYPE THINGSInjuries. Both teams are potentially taking hits to important starters. If one of Ball or Lendeborg is no-go or extremely limited, the equation shifts. Obviously.xDAWG: improving [Campredon]Coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine. Michigan's two most important players in this game are the glow-up twins: Aday Mara and Trey McKenney. They blew through Arizona for 26 and 16, respectively, on ORTGs of 139 and 129. Mara is more or less contest-immune and against Arizona he backed down offensive linemen from the perimeter; my midseason complaints about settling for that short hook are moot now. He's rocketing into the lottery because erratic midseason Mara has been replaced by a two way superstar.Meanwhile McKenney is coming into his own as a gunner who has three-level scoring on the way. Assuming Lendeborg is limited, much of the extra burden is going to fall on him. McKenney can bail Michigan out of some bad possessions and make good ones efficient. I don't mind that over-aggressive possession he had against Arizona much. Michigan needs McKenney to get it in this one.Can UConn attack drop? The Huskies shoot a lot of threes but pretty much all of them are off-ball actions that Michigan will switch. They do not have a true rise-and-fire guy, and their most prolific PNR guys are middling at the rim against guys who are not Aday Mara. Meanwhile UConn cannot pull Mara out of the paint with their non-shooting bigs. There is a scenario where Michigan forces UConn into a bunch of ball screens that just don't work. This leaves UConn's… sigh… extremely good midrange jumpers to pick up the slack. But still: are you beating Michigan shooting 22 midrangers? Arizona did that, and they did not do that. Can Michigan combat blitzing? One major advantage UConn has defensively relative to Arizona is Reed's mobility. Switching him looks like an obviously bad idea—nobody else on the UConn roster is checking Mara/Johnson, full stop—but after a game where Cadeau could confidently expect drop coverage on every pick and roll, UConn has the capability to throw flat hedges and traps at him, with Reed recovering in a way that Krivas wasn't going to manage.Nonzero chance that the calm and composed Cadeau who everyone raved about even after a 2/14 first half looks a lot sketchier in a situation where he's going to have a lot more stuff thrown at him. Counterpoint: if you discount a couple turnovers that were obvious fouls and a couple that were Globetrotter attempts after the Arizona game was decided, Cadeau hasn't had a legit high turnover game since the first game of the BTT.Does Karaban get obliterated? The Lendeborg injury is killing me because I think Karaban playing 40 minutes of defense against Lendborg/Johnson was going to ruin him offensively and also provide Michigan well over a point per possession. Even if Lendeborg is out or limited, Karaban is a much easier ask for Morez Johnson than most of the guys he's played over the last month of the season, which has been a tough one for him.THE SECTION WHERE I PREDICT THE SAME THING KENPOM DOESMichigan by 7.

Other than St. John's being good at basketball, what made them so special that they could beat the pants off UConn? What was their secret sauce? How can Michigan emulate that?

They actually went 1-2 against St. John's - destroying them 72-40 at home in the 2nd regular season meeting. That was the game St. John's couldn't hit a shot in the 2nd half. They met gain in the conference tourney and UConn fell 72-52.

I watched part of the first game and UConn just looked sloppy and uncomposed, sort of like Michigan did against Wake Forest and TCU. I don't understand hoops well enough to know if St. John's did anything to cause that, but maybe UConn just took longer into the season to really gel as a team?

Ask & you shall receive. From Google's AI (Gemini):St. John's defeated UConn 72-52 in the 2026 Big East Tournament final by utilizing a fast 10-0 start, stellar defensive interior play, and capitalizing on a major offensive collapse by the Huskies. Zuby Ejiofor's 18 points and dominant post presence, combined with a 1-for-15 shooting stretch by UConn late, secured the title. Yahoo Sports +1Key Factors in St. John's Victory:Dominant Defense: St. John's (led by Ejiofor's 7 blocks and 3 steals) stifled UConn, which struggled with shooting consistency.UConn's Offensive Collapse: The Huskies failed to connect on a field goal for the final 17:28 of the second half.Fast Start: St. John's immediately went up by 17 in the first half and withstood a brief second-half comeback attempt.Injury & Fatigue: UConn was hampered by an injury to guard Silas Demary Jr. and showed signs of inconsistency after a previously rough loss to Creighton.

It's probably mixing up games AND teams. St. John's had a brutal second half in another game between the teams this year. Add to that AI asserting the salience of a UConn loss to Creighton a month before the game in question took place.

I will once again do my part by going into my bunker and avoiding any contact with the game whatsoever ... no watching, no peeking at the score, nothing. Science has proven that if I do that, Michigan -- football, basketball -- does better. I've been conducting my study since the mid-1970s. It's pretty settled science by this point.See y'all on the other side, and may Michigan hang that banner!

I expect Uconn to switch up defenses to try & slow down the processing by our players. They also get back after the shot goes up, so no transition opportunities. On offense, I think Hurley runs so many sets because he can anticipate where they're going to force contact & then he can yell at the officials for a foul. This has the makings of a low possession drawn out not very good looking basketball game if Uconn can dictate pace & get us in foul trouble. We can flip that script by throwing out different defenses & getting steals that lead to short court transition opportunities. And just settling in & playing the long game because we have a better team.

UConn doesn't foul and doesn't get to the line which is a good thing. Reed is a nonshooter so that will make Mara more playable in drop coverage scheme and he can camp in the paint to dare UConn to get to the rim. They do a lot of off ball actions but that should be negated by Michigan's switching scheme as long as they can communicate. UConn isn't a great team and Michigan is a great team. I'm less worried about UConn than I am with Arizona.

I meant pre-final four. Arizona is a much stronger team than UConn, and Michigan just dominated them like they're a mid-major team

The difference between this and Finland/Washington is that Arizona is historically on par with UConn in my mind, whereas Duke would be Bama/Soviets.We beat something like tbe best ever Oregon. Or the Czechs with Hasek. And now we are going against someone like Miami or...sure I guess Finalnd

I'm oscillating between extremely optimistic and a little worried. On one hand Michigan is clearly the better team and has been outright dominant in the tournament. They have a ceiling that no team can reach. When the defense is on, it can suffocate any type of offense. On the other hand, the Yaxel injury looms. He is easily the best player for either team, so what happens when he isn't 100%? Also UConn has weird tournament magic, they have been extremely good at prepping for teams on 1 day of rest. Also they are very old and battle tested. Half their team has already won a championship and Karaban has 2 rings. So yeah at the end of the day not sure what to think. Just hoping Michigan plays their best game and the sheer talent and size wins out.

Connecticut is a decent team that's extremely well coached, but unless Mullins and Kalaban combne for 40% from deep, I like our chances. Reed really doesn't scare me at all on either end, though I do give him credit for finally fixing his Butterfingers

На границе Сербии и Венгрии предотвращен теракт против критически важной инфраструктуры – газопровода, по которому прокачивается российский газ. Следствие идет, но стыдно подозревать, когда вполне уверен: это Украина. Киев явным образом обнаглел.
