Will My Lover, the Rabbi be a sober yet uplifting account of the conflict between religious orthodoxy and forbidden desire? Not a bit of it. The book’s central and anchoring fact – the overwhelming desire of a man who works as an antique furniture restorer for a man who works in a synagogue – is accepted as a given by every single character. The writing, meanwhile, treats all realist convention with a kind of exalted scorn, conjuring the dangers and delights of obsession in prose that is itself unashamedly obsessive – and wonderfully frank when it gets down to the physical details. The result is as fierce and strange as anything you’re going to read this year.The fierceness begins immediately. All the book’s 188 chapters are short, but the first one comes in at only four lines. Putting both punctuation and vocabulary to tactically unexpected use, it plunges the reader straight into a world of carnality, confusion and bizarrely specific detail. Like all but a handful of the chapters, it also includes the title of the book itself. And as the book proceeds, this reiteration of the title begins to toll like a bell through the architecture of its prose, becoming almost a mantra. Read more I’m about to pull the trigger on a Giant Defy and I’m torn between two deals: Defy Advanced 0 (2025) — ~€3070 shipped → Comes with Giant SLR2 carbon wheels (hookless, tubeless) Defy Advanced 1 (2024) — ~€2940 shipped → Comes with PR2 aluminum wheels (hooked) So the price difference is only ~€130, which makes the Advanced 0 very tempting. Context: I ride mostly long distances (100km+), endurance style I care about performance but don’t race I’d probably run 30–32mm tires I’m a bit unsure about hookless + tubeless (never used it before) Main questions: Are the SLR2 hookless wheels worth it over PR2 for such a small price difference? How annoying is tubeless in real-world use (especially tire changes)? Would you trust hookless long-term, or is it safer to stick with hooked rims? If I go with the Advanced 1, I’d probably upgrade wheels later — is that just worse value overall? Would appreciate input, especially from people riding the Defy or similar endurance setups. Extra question: Would it make sense to just get the Advanced 0 and sell the SLR2 wheels new (take-off)?
